Cal Football: Where does it Rank in California?

Clearly the post that I wrote yesterday sparked some debate. So much so, that this blog was called childish and was compared to the writing of a 5th grader. While I appreciate the negative hyperbole(s) in the comments section, I cannot help but think how easy it is to drive people crazy. The post from yesterday had a bunch of numbers and plain facts, nothing flashy. Nor was there an attempt to ridicule and be funny. Well, maybe ridicule but there was no attempt to be cute about it, just lay down the facts. Sorry if your history looks pathetic and angers you Cal fans. This past decade for UCLA has not been so fun either, so I can see where you are coming from. Now, it is time to look at how Cal football has compared to its California rivals since 1930. However, so numbers would include numbers from before that if the teams played Cal back then. UCLA was the freshest school (the baby brother perhaps?) out of the group so those numbers will be skewed.

The ordering of examination will begin with its least of rivals, U$C. Both schools have been around the top of the conference pretty much all decade long and Cal had a memorable 2003 win at home against the shady Trojans. However, U$C has pretty much dominated the Bears since then, having won every game since. Nonetheless, it will be unforgivable to only look at the last decade of this fervor rivalry. The series against U$C dates back to 1912 according to Cal's Rivals page. At the end of the 90's, Cal actually had a three game winning streak against the Trojans, a respectable feat. Sadly for Cal Bears, life was not as pretty against the Trojans before that. The all time record between Cal and U$C?
61-30-5, in favor of the Trojans, yikes!

With this vicious statistic, it is time to move on to the Bruins of UCLA. Many Cal fans love poking fun at UCLA calling it a little brother, 2nd tier school and sports program, etc. True, UC Berkeley is still the number one public school in the nation, but little brother UCLA is not far behind. Furthermore, when it comes to the football field, the nod goes to UCLA. This decade has been a stalemate between the two siblings, with Cal owning a 5-4 record and each team winning on its respective home field. The Bears have a chance to break the trend this coming weekend if they win at the Rose Bowl. Cal did win in 1999 in LA, but the win had to be forfeited due to use of ineligible players. Even though the last decade has been pretty much even between the Blue and Gold schools, the history is in UCLA's favor. Honestly, it's not even close. You ready for the harsh truth Bears? Here it is:
49-28-1, 21 more wins for UCLA, not to bad for "little brother"

The only chance Cal has to not be the historically worst football program in the state of California (no Bears, SJSU and SDSU are not included), is if they have had a better record against the rivals from Palo Alto. Growing up there, I remember the hype and fun that went into the game, before/during/after. However, I was not aware of the all time series wins. This decade has been for the most part all Cal, although a stinging loss in 2007 against a 3 win Stanford team at the time hurt. Before we get to the all time record, let me make another point. Cal fans show up to games, Stanford fans don't. Cal fans have loyalty. Saying that, here is the all time series between the two schools? Well, check it out:
55-45-11, dating back to 1892, still... ouch!

Well this does not look pretty. I am personally surprised because I thought that Cal would hold an edge over Stanford at the least, but I suppose that I was wrong. If it any condolence for Cal fans, ESPN ranked you one stop higher than Stanford on its all time list at 44 (link in the previous comments thread). FYI, U$C is ranked at #2, and UCLA at #16.

Since I will not be satisfied until I unveil the Rose Bowl records for all teams for more fun statistical evidence, those shall be my last words. Enjoy!

U$C Rose Bowl record: 24-9-0, last appearance in 2009
UCLA Rose Bowl record: 5-7-0, last appearance in 1999
Stanford Rose Bowl record: 5-6-1, last appearance in 2000

  1. OUCH! Our Cal football program really has been pathetic.
Keep your head up, Cal fans! Our women's tennis team will be awesome.

  2. Ran - Good job on presenting objective, non-debatable data in yesterday's and today's post. The historical review of Cal's football program was interesting, and the comparative results truly defines how Cal's program compares with those of the other California programs.

  3. Ahem...
Let's review the UCLA vs. Cal record:
    UCLA: 49 wins (62.8%)
    Cal: 28 wins (35.9%)
    1 tie

In the UC system, UCLA remains the top football program. Stay proud, Bears. Just think of the Avis rental car analogy - - try harder!

  4. We should summarize:
UCLA has been better than Cal in:
    - football
    - basketball
    - most NCAA team championships
    - better location
    - the list goes on and on...

Avg GPA for Fall '09 freshman:
    - UCLA: 4.16
    - UCB: 4.15

  6. You know, the depths that you people have plumbed to find things at which Ucla is "better" than Cal is kind of sad, in an amusing way.

Think about it. What state of mind must you have in order to take pleasure in such arcane and (quite honestly) irrelevant "facts" as these? Not to mention that you seem to continue to wrap yourselves in wins coming from the 60's and 70's as some sort of indication of superiority at the present time. Oh, and in case you didn't realize it, Cal fans understand their record of futility and failure. Yes, we have an overall losing record to Ucla, SC, and Stanfurd. But, unless I am mistaken, past history does not translate into current results.

Crowing about accomplishments from decades past is the last solace of someone who has nothing about which to take pride today.

Oh, and nice job with the Ucla students, alumni, and fans emptying out the Rose Bowl with more than 5 minutes left to go in the game! The extra legroom was nice. And it felt very satisfying to hear that cavernous pit filled with the cheers of Cal fans young and old, as well as having the rightful owners play the fight song. But then, I shouldn't have expected anything less from arrogant, petty, juvenile, and petulant "fans" who live in the past.

Good luck getting to 6 wins!

  7. Hitting the bong a little too much up in Berzerkly again? Kal fans don't leave early? I guess you don't go to Kal games (don't blame you).
    Read this, Kal hyprocrit:

  8. Oh look! A Kal fan gloating on Tedford's first win in the Rose Bowl against the Bruins. It was nice to hear the UCLA fans give the U-C-L-A FIGHT-FIGHT-FIGHT when the Kal band played their song. I guess also you didn't watch the SUC-Kal game when your stadium was empty before the game ended. What a d-bag.

  9. "hypocrit"

I see the standards for both admission and education haven't changed at Westwood High, huh?

  10. Hey UCLA fans - We acknowledge UCLA's 104 NCAA team championships, their stellar basketball program, and their international academic recognition, all of which current Bruins and alumni should be proud. However, we are Cal and shall maintain our arrogance. So there.
