Cal Football: Where Amazing Hasn't Happened in 60 years

With the inevitable arrival of the California Golden Bears to the Rose Bowl this coming Saturday, I decided to do some real investigating of what Cal football is all about. Most of my teens and early twenties have come with Jeff Tedford reigning over Berkeley and for the most part, he has done an amazing job. To make sure that Tedford Fever is reasonable, I went to Wikipedia to check out his numbers as the head football coach of the Bears. The results? Pretty darn convincing. He has a record of 62-32 overall, four consecutive bowl game wins, and even a tie for first place (but no Rose Bowl). However, life is not so sweet over in Strawberry Canyon. During the Tedford Era, Cal has only managed three top-3 finishes in the Pac-10, with the last one coming in 2006. Overall, Cal has been the about the 4th (or maybe 3rd if we want to round up) team in the Pac-10 since 2002. Being in the top-4 is fantastic for many programs. For Cal, you might even say it's heaven.
From 1978-2001, Cal football has managed only 3 top-4 finishes. Two of those were #4, and one was #2. However, there was football prior to 1978, so lets dig further. From 1950-1977, Cal had 16 top-4 finishes, with two Rose Bowl appearances (which they lost). So lets see, for the second half of the 20th century, the Bears had a total of 19 top-4 finishes in 50 years. Oh by the way, the conference expanded to 10 in 1978, so top-4 is a very generous measure of decency.

But wait! What happened before 1950??? Well, Cal was not too bad back then. Let's go back another 25 years. They had a total of 11 top-4 finishes in that time, that is about 40%, kind of pathetic. The Rose Bowl record during those years? 1-4, while it doesn't look good, at least they actually made it to FIVE Rose Bowls, way to go Cal!!! To finish this magical carpet ride through history, we shall trace back to 1916 and examine Cal's performance then. They made it to the top-4 in the conference 7 out of 10 times, and won and tied a Rose Bowl! They also had a streak of 50 won games, which is really outstanding.

With all the mediocre history, with the exception of a span of 10 years from 1916-1925, how can Cal fans dare trash talk other schools? Let's examine Cal's record over the decades, as well as Rose Bowl record.
1910s: 24-13-3, 60%
1920s: 73-15-7, 77%
1930s: 69-33-5, 64%
1940s: 55-47-2, 53%
1950s: 48-50-4, 47%
1960s: 35-61-4, 35%
1970s: 60-50-1, 54%
1980s: 37-69-2, 34%
1990s: 51-63-1, 44%
2000s: 63-48-0, 57% (this does not include 2009)

Overall: 619-473-51, 54%, Rose Bowls: 2-5-1, 25%
Part II will come tomorrow, comparing Cal to it's California rivals, Stanford, U$C, and UCLA since 1930!

  2. Cal is the bestest in everything. Berkeley is way better than Westwood (we have tie dye shirts being sold on most streets in Berkeley. Our fight song can be played at two schools, Cal and UCLA where the UCLA fans shout U-C-L-A fight-fight-fight when they hear our song. So there. We's better.

  3. better at sports? how many national championships does Cal have? maybe 30. UCLA has 104. ouch.

And academically, Cal is ranked 4 spots higher than UCLA, tiny difference. Not to mention its had a higher admission rate.

Ladies? Cal girls are known for their fugliness. get a life you bitter bear.

  5. I agree with Anon @ 4:09. Cal is the "bestest" since we have Rugby and, other stuff. UCLA may have the most NCAA team championships at 104, but Cal is still superior at, umm, let me get back to you.

  6. Cal with no Rose Bowl appearance since 1959?!!! What a joke! In 1959:
    - Eisenhower was President
    - Alaska and Hawaii become 49th/50th states
    - Cost of 1st class stamp = 4¢
    - Cost of a gallon of gas = 25¢

1959!!!! What a joke Cal is!

o U.S. Grammy music awards started
o Ben Hur was the popular film
    o Bonanza premiered on TV

  8. Goddammit, Bears, come on. Sorry Ran, I'm embarassed to be grouped together with the retard assholes above. I would certainly consider Cal the superior academic institution (seriously, don't throw around the "our acceptance rate is lower" bullshit because it's simply a smatter of supply and demand, where a TON more stuents apply to UCLA because of location and culture, but UCLA simply cannot accomodate that many students and therefore the acceptance rate is skewed down). In the big timeline, however, UCLA is historically the athletically superior school. According to Wikipedia, we have 72 national championships - not too shabby, but not >100.

  9. Anonymous poster #1 is absolutely correct, Cal is superior to UCLA. Oski the Bear is soooo cool when compared to Joe Bruin. Berkeley is light out, the happenin' place to be, such as our libraries stay open late on weekends. We can even watch the Dodgers and Angels on TV in the Bay Area.

  10. Oh, more fun facts thanks to ESPN:
    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3842161

Cal's ranking on here: 44 all time.

ps. Gordon, I agree Cal is better academically for the most part (there are a few depts where UCLA might have the edge). However, the difference is not that big. Regardless, I never made fun of Cal's academics because that'd be plain stupid.

  11. Please don't make fun of Cal. We have good stuff too, like Top Dog hotdogs and some good pizza. Tie dye shirts are da' bomb! I know we still live in the 1960s, but that is our identity. GO BEARS!

  12. Good grief! Are you people that gullible? The "Anonymous" posters trying to hype Cal (like Anon #1, #2, #5, etc) are obvioulsy pathetic Ucla shills ... I wouldn't be surprised if they were some of the guys who "write" this blog just trolling for comments!

This whole post, not to mention the blog, is just very lame. Very.

Lame site, lame posts, lame blog name.

  13. Hey you phoney Ucla posters! Don't make fun of Cal. Under Coach Tedford, we shall rise to the top, he will take us to the promised land. When? - I don't know, but when he does then I will know, then I'll let you know, ya' know? GOB EARS!

  14. I think these "anonymous" commenters are the ones who write this blog. Also, people who go to good universities should not have such horrible grammar.

  15. Haha. Don't worry Bruin fans, the Cardinal will feast on bear meat. When all 7 of the Cal fans come to the Farm for the big game, they'll learn that Palo Alto >> Berzerkly, and the Cardinal >> hibernating bears.

  16. Why would we choose to ridicule this blog? That is the dumbest thing I have heard since Cal fans claimed they had a football program with a reputable history.

  17. Stop feeding the Troll! He's coming out from under his bridge!

  18. Gordo, like most Berekely fans, you are a complete idiot for claiming that you campus has "72 national championships."

Instead of just relying on Wikipedia, why don't you do some real research? 30 of those "72" are individual championships, not team victories.

Therefore, to set the record straight, UCLA has 104 NCAA Team Championships and Berkeley has around 40.

That's a pretty crappy showing, given that you had a 51-year head start on UCLA. What losers!
