Due to all the madness that is the college football season and the quarter system, I forgot to write up about one of the best sporting events that I have been to in a long time. The teams? UCLA and U$C. The venue? Legendary Pauley Pavilion. The atmosphere? Raucous. The sport? Women's Volleyball. Yes, that's right. Women's volleyball was the toast of the campus on Friday night (apologies to the women's soccer team). Sure, it was a match against the hated Women of Troy. But that evening was more than that. I have been to a couple other matches against the rivals from South Central, and while those were heated, they did not come close to this one. There were 3,018 fans in attendance, and none of them seemed to pass an opportunity to cheer, yell, and heckle. Oh, and there were about 80-90 UCLA band members who would not stop cheering and flashing their keys, cash, and credit cards whenever a U$C player had the ball.
While the match started out with both teams playing well, by the end of the first set, it was pretty obvious which team was the inspired bunch. The Bruins came back multiple times facing a deep hole in the first set and rallied to take it. The Women of Troy could not recover in the second set, with the Bruins cruising to take a 2-0 lead. However, the third set was much closer and more contested, but in the end, good prevailed and the set was won. The final mark? 3-0 UCLA. A sweep. A win against the hated rivals. The band played Mighty Bruins and the song formerly known as Sons of Westwood. The crowd cheered and roared. The players went over and thanked all those who came. In all honesty, we should have all probably thanked them as well for giving us students and fans a reason to cheer. Keep it up ladies, bring home #105.
