Trouble in the Bluegrass State

There’s an odd duality of sorts materializing in the oddly shaped and slightly irrelevant state of Kentucky. And of course by the state of Kentucky I of course mean the University of Kentucky, and by that I’m really just referring to their basketball team. It’s important to have your priorities straight.

As newly appointed coach and savior of the once vaunted collegiate basketball program at U of K, John Calipari spent last Friday night strutting around a stage in front of Wildcat fans as if God himself had picked Memphis in his bracket for the 2010 tournament. You’d have thunk he’d actually won a game yet.

Meanwhile, across town, former Kentucky Coach Billy Gillispie came to the unsavory conclusion that his $3 million buyout settlement with the school wasn’t going to cut it. He has since filed lawsuit with the University who promptly countersued for some ungodly reason that I have zero interest in figuring out. Law is boring. The odd part is I can sympathize with this move granted his coaching options have been far more limited since the basketball community realized he couldn’t even bring a program as legendary as Kentucky’s to the big dance. If anyone needs the financial security right now...

To be honest the real duality here is my equal loathing of and yet pity for these southern gents. Each has to face the unfortunate realities of wanting something they haven’t earned and of having lived in Kentucky. It’s a cruel world for basketball coaches.
