With four games left on the Pac-10 schedule, it might be a bit premature to declare Oregon the king of the conference. However, with the thrashing, well destruction of U$C tonight, things are looking really good up in Eugene. I was just reading Ted Miller's blog over at ESPN.com and he gave a very cool stat: The 47 points given up by the Trojan defense were the most since giving up 48 to UCLA in 1996. That is pure insanity. I saw Oregon beat UCLA in person three weeks ago and they did not look this good. The last few weeks though they have been unstoppable on offense, and the defense has been really really good. It honestly is amazing how things change so fast in the world of college football.
Remember Thursday Sept 3rd? Boise State does. That game was a giant embarrassment to Oregon, the Pac 10, and Nike wearing people et al. Oh, how badly Oregon looked. Things change quickly huh? Oregon has not lost since, having taken down such powers as Cal, Utah, and U$C in the process. Add to that a couple nice road wins against the Bruins and rival Huskies, and you got yourself a legitimate case for why Oregon should be playing in the "other" game in Pasadena in January. Unfortunately for Oregon, the road to Pasadena is not so easy. They have to play tough games at Arizona and Stanford, both of which sit at #2 and #3 in the conference respectively. Add to that the Civil War game against the Beavers, and you got yourself a recipe for disaster. Personally, I feel that the Ducks can pull it off, maybe dropping one game in the process and make it to the Rose Bowl. However, as Oregon has shown us, things change a lot from week to week in college football. I guess that that is why you play the games right?
